The study, published in the Journal Psychiatry Research showed that inhaling these essential oils resulted in a sharp drop in the levels of cortisol – a hormone released when stressed.

Low levels of cortisol are beneficial however, today’s high-stress lifestyles have lead to higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream, which have been associated with many negative effects. It increases blood pressure; blood sugar levels and suppresses the immune system. It is also known to cause oxidative stress, which leads to the damage of healthy cells in the body and is linked to common degenerative diseases and the ageing process.
